Adobe After Effects CS5 is a visual effects, digital motion graphics and compositing tool, which is mainly designed for the post-production process of audiovisual projects. The program is able to generate 2D animation, visual FX compositing and also finishing techniques such as image adjustment, color correction, etc. It can be also used as a media transcoder or a non-linear video editing program.
This version offers some improvements and new features such as a planar tracking tool or the roto brush, which will help you with your rotoscoping tasks. You can paint over the person or object you want to isolate and the roto brush will analyze the frames, creating a matte. The program also includes Color Finesse 3, which is a color correction tool developed by Synthetic Aperture. You will be able to adjust the colors in your composition with its powerful toolset. There is another third-party add-on which is included in this version, DigiEffects Freeform. With this useful plug-in, you will be able to distort and displace flat objects in 3D space. However, bear in mind that this software is not an easy utility for first-time users, so you may need some tutorials before you start using it.
How to use
Adobe After Effects CS5 has plenty of possible functions. Its workflow is layer-based, and the interface displays all the tools you need in order to achieve professional outcomes. You will find a timeline, effects, templates and more complex tools such as the wiggler or motion trackers. Besides, you can customize this interface and adapt it to your necessities by hiding some tools or enabling others. One of the basic things you can do with this program is to create masks using Bezier paths. You are free to animate those masks or modify them by choosing specific points or the whole shape. Those masks can be used to merge images together or to perform frame-by-frame rotoscopy tasks. In After Effects, animations come through keyframes. Those are single frames which you can configure to start or end something. You can transform almost every parameter you desire individually: opacity, scale, rotation, etc. Possibilities are almost unlimited.
Although this software offers variety of built-in effects, filters and templates, you can download and install additional plugins. Those plugins will enable new effects to add to your footage. Some have subtle results like color correction, but others can recreate amazing things, such as virtual oceans (Psunami). Besides, you can automate some processes by using expressions. These expressions can affect several parameters such as opacity, rotation, scale, etc. by specifying some variable settings. One of the best things about this sophisticated application is that you can import and export compositions to other Adobe programs such as Photoshop or Premiere. Moreover, if you import a .psd file in After Effects, its layers will remain.

Adobe’s After Effects is considered a must have for 2D and 3D graphics works. This software has been called the Photoshop for videos, which makes sense. For those familiar with the last versions of it, you will find that not much has changed. If you are working in film and broadcast or delivering work online and to mobile device, this software enables you to create blockbuster visual effects and groundbreaking motion graphics. For those new to this software, it might seem intimidating at first. The basics of the program are moderately easy to pick up, while absolute mastery of the software could take a lot of time. I have been using it for 5 years or more, and I still end up watching online tutorials almost every other day to study new tricks. If you want to make your video more interesting and look better, then this software is right for you.
- The graphic design ended up pretty well
- This software is very easy to install
- Every time I tried to add an effect or anything, it crashes

After Effects CS5 involves a 64 bit processor. You have to ensure your PC is capable of managing this powerful program. Now I can accomplish my tasks quickly, thanks to its new features and upgrades. Another plus with the upgrade 64-bit processors is that the capability to preview a large number of videos, which is priceless when tweaking with effects. If your computer has more RAM, previews of larger and longer clips is allowable before you can render them. In addition, this program claims that there is no limit to the memory performance. Though my computer only has 7 or 8 GB of RAM, I could not experiment this theory.
Moreover, the new After Effects is attuned to formats from previous versions, something which older After Effects could not handle. Also, ACHD formats are now well-matched and it now works with the RED camera. Thanks to its 64-bit memory, it now easier than before to work between Adobe’s After Effects and Premiere when creating footages for your projects.
- Features are easy to understand
- The graphic designing ended up pretty well
- The price is a bit high, but worth it
